Finding your color season

As we approach these colder months, The tans are already fading, and we cannot believe summer is almost a season behind us. As we approach the Holidays and the weater cools, we all tend to lean toward out neutral wardrobes What should we do when this happens?

Well, that's why you have us. We have been seeing all over social media the resurgence of finding your color season, whether you're a winter, spring, summer, or fall.

SBC is here to guide you into finding your best color season to own your individual, and creative style.

This short discovery quiz will help take the guesswork out of what true color will best suit you, and enhance your already gorgeous features.

WHAT COLOR SEASON FITS YOU?

Now before we start, let me say, this does NOT mean you can't ever wear a certain color. If you like something then wear it, it's all about confidence.

This is meant to be informative, but also fun! I know how challenging it can be to find the perfect color. Our aim is for this to bring some relief next time you're wardrobe shopping.

Alright ladies and gentlemen, let's get started!

1. How do you determine your season?

Determining your season is broken up into three main categories:

HUE: warm or cool undertones

VALUE: light or dark

CHROMA: muted/soft or bright/clear

Let's break it down..

WARM OR COOL?

We have all heard and for the most part, may know if our skin undertones lean warm or cool. If you're wanting to know how to check your skin's undertone, here are a few things you can do:

  • gold vs silver jewelry:

    • If your skin brightens when wearing gold jewelry, you could be warm-toned. If you notice silver is your color, you are cool-toned.

  • the white t-shirt test:

    • When you put on a basic white tee, if your skin looks a tad rosy, think cool-toned. If you have more yellow in your face with a white tee, think warm-toned.

  • check out your veins:

    • If the veins on your wrists look more greenish, you most likely have a warm undertone. On the other hand, if they're blueish/purple, you have more of a cool undertone.

I want you to write down on a sheet of paper if you're cool or warm.

Don't worry, we'll guide you on what to do next.

LIGHT OR DARK?

Next on the list, we are talking about the depth between our features of hair, skin, and eye color. Let's break it down even further, shall we?

Light Contrast:If you have a light contrast, this means you have an absence or subtle depth in your features.

When you think about the contrast of your face, think about an Instagram photo, where you can toggle contrast up or down. When you turn it down (aka having light contrast) the picture loses it's depth. Now, turn up the contrast, and certain aspects to the photo stand out! It's the same thing, just with our face.

Look at the lovely ladies below, notice how all of their skin tones, eyes, and hair color, are light, and don't have much contrast to them.

Now you can see how with these women's eyes, skin, and hair, there's an absence of depth and it all in a way, blends together! IF you're still unsure, it's okay, we are talking dark contrast in just a moment!

Dark Contrast:If you have a dark contrast, your contrast is medium to high, and you can see the depth between your eyes, hair, and skin colors.

Now take that same sheet of paper and write down light or dark.

One more category to go!

MUTED OR BRIGHT?

Last, but certainly not least, let's determine your chroma!

A muted chroma has more of a homogeneous look, where features aren't standing out, your features are all very similar and blend together. The lack of contrast in a muted chroma has almost a grayness of coloring, let me show you with the ladies below!

Notice how their face blends together, and all the features are similar to each other.

On the other hand, bright chroma has noticeable definiton and clarity, there is saturation in your features, and it causes them to pop out! Your features don't blend together and distinctly stand out from each other. We have an example for you below!

It's time to take that same sheet of paper and write down for your final category, muted or bright!

Now that we have our answers for all three categories:

1. Hue

2. Value

3. Chroma

Let's figure out our color season. Remember this guy from earlier?

If you have a cool hue, dark value, and bright chroma, you are a WINTER.

If you have a warm hue, light value, and a bright chromas, you are a SPRING.

If you have a cool hue, light value, and a muted chroma, you are a SUMMER.

Last, but not least, if you have a warm hue, dark value, and muted chroma, you are an AUTUMN.

If you haven't already noticed there are other identifiers in each season, these help narrow down your true colors. Don't worry, SBC's got you covered, next week, we'll break down each season!

We want to see where your results take you. If you're instantly inspired to find some fresh wardrobe items and staples for YOUR color season, tag @styledbycohen and let's see you shine!
